Two-Stick X: the model golfer in position

Two-Stick X

Shows the gap between hips and shoulders, and how it stretches as the hips start down.

Use this if

Your hips and shoulders turn as one block.

The fault

Hips and shoulders turn as one block, so there is no stretch to unwind.

Steps

  1. Slide an alignment stick through your belt loops
  2. Cross your arms holding a second alignment stick across your chest, in posture
  3. Turn back slowly; hips turn less than the chest
  4. Start the hips toward the target while the chest stays turned
  5. Feel the stretch, then turn both through to a finish

Hips start, chest waits a beat

Reps

3 x 5 slow rehearsals, then 5 half swings with a ball

Why it works

Seeing a hip line and a shoulder line together makes separation visible. Research suggests the useful stretch comes as the hips start down while the chest is still finishing its turn, not from straining harder at the top.

You need

Alignment stick, club, ball

At home

No ball needed. Stay within comfort; don't force a bigger coil at the top.
