Headcover Gate: the model golfer in position

Headcover Gate

A headcover outside the ball catches an over-the-top path and rewards coming from inside.

Swing Path

Use this if

You come over the top and pull-slice.

The fault

Over the top: the club comes down from outside and cuts across the ball.

Steps

  1. Place a headcover a hand's width outside the ball line and a few inches behind the ball.
  2. Make slow half swings that miss it on the way down.
  3. Feel the trail elbow stay in front of the trail hip as you start down.
  4. Build to three-quarter, then full swings.
  5. Move the cover a little closer as you get comfortable.

Come from inside, miss the cover

Reps

10 slow half swings, then 10 balls at about 70% with the cover in place

Why it works

An outside club hits the headcover; missing it usually means the club came down from the inside. The gate gives instant feedback without needing to understand plane.

You need

Headcover, club, ball

At home

Any soft object works (a glove or towel). Use a headcover, not a hard object.
