Swing Out Along the Stick: the model golfer in position

Swing Out Along the Stick

A ground stick angled a few degrees out gives the club an exit line to trace.

Swing Path
10 min · Range or home · Starter

Use this if

The club exits pulled across the line.

The fault

Cutting across the ball: the club exits pulled across the target line.

Steps

  1. Lay an alignment stick on the ground a foot ahead of the ball
  2. Angle it a little out from the target line, away from you
  3. Swing so the clubhead starts out along the stick after the ball
  4. Keep turning your belt buckle through; the club curves back around
  5. Start with half swings, then build up

Out along the stick, then turn through

Reps

10 half swings tracing the stick, then 10 balls at about 75%

Why it works

A visible exit line a touch out from the target gives the clubhead a target after impact, which tends to bring the path from the inside. It is a feel: the club exits a touch out, then the body keeps turning it around into the finish.

You need

Alignment stick, club, ball

At home

Indoors, lay the stick on a mat and rehearse without a ball.
