Pause at the Top: the model golfer in position

Pause at the Top

A one-count pause at the top so the ground, not the arms, starts the downswing.

Use this if

You rush from the top.

The fault

Rushing from the top: the arms and shoulders throw the club before the backswing has finished.

Steps

  1. Swing to the top and hold for about one second
  2. Feel the club settle into your hands
  3. Start down with pressure into the lead foot as the hips turn
  4. Let the arms fall and swing through to a held finish
  5. After 5 balls, shorten the pause until it's just a feel

Pause, then let the ground start it

Reps

5 pause swings without a ball, 10 balls with the pause, 5 without

Why it works

A short pause separates the two directions, so the downswing has to start fresh from the ground up instead of with a throw. It also makes a rushed top easy to feel.
