Count-to-Four Tempo
A backswing three beats long and a downswing one beat long, at any pace.
TempoTransition
Use this if
Your swing feels rushed, or the backswing drags and you hit from the top.
The fault
Snatching the club back, or a slow, drawn-out backswing followed by a hit from the top.
Steps
- Without a ball, start the club back as you say 'and'
- Keep it moving through 'one' and 'two'
- Arrive at the top as you say 'three'
- Strike on 'four': three beats back, one beat down
- Add a ball and count under your breath, slow count then quicker
Go on 'and', top on three, hit four
Reps
5 no-ball rehearsals at a slow count, 5 at a quicker count, then 10 balls counting
Why it works
Tempo is a ratio, not a speed. Starting on 'and' and reaching the top on 'three' gives three equal beats back and one beat down, so the proportion holds while you choose the overall pace.
You need
Club, ball
At home
Works at home as no-ball rehearsals. A metronome app with four even clicks can replace counting out loud.
