Arm-Hang Setup Check: the model golfer in position

Arm-Hang Setup Check

Let the lead arm hang to set ball distance and a forward bend you can keep.

PostureConsistency
2 min · Range or home · Starter

Use this if

You stand too close and crowd the ball.

The fault

Crowding the ball at address, so the hips have to move to make room later.

Steps

  1. Stand tall, then hinge forward from the hips with soft knees
  2. Let your lead arm hang straight down from the shoulder
  3. Grip where the hand hangs and sole the club there
  4. If that feels a bit far, that may be correct after years of crowding
  5. Redo the check every fifth ball

Let the arm hang, grip there

Reps

Every setup for one bucket, checking every fifth ball

Why it works

Hinging from the hips and letting the lead arm hang straight down puts the hands under the shoulders, giving the arms room without the pelvis moving toward the ball. Studies suggest setup consistency is one of the clearer differences between skill levels.
