Let-Go Release: the model golfer in position

Let-Go Release

The trail hand comes off past impact so the club can release freely instead of holding on.

Use this if

Your shots block or slice and your release reads late.

The fault

Holding on: the face stays open and the club does not release, so shots block or slice.

Steps

  1. Swing back to about three-quarters with both hands.
  2. Swing down normally with both hands on.
  3. Just after the ball, open the trail hand and let it come off.
  4. Let the lead arm and club swing up to a lead-arm finish.
  5. Hit normal swings keeping the same free release.

Let it go through the ball

Reps

8 lead-hand-finish swings with a 9-iron at about 50%, then 5 normal swings with the same feel

Why it works

Letting the trail hand come off just after impact removes the grip pressure that holds the face, so the lead arm and club can swing through and the club head passes the hands.

You need

Club, ball

At home

Keep a firm lead-hand grip; the lead hand keeps hold of the club the whole time. Leave space around you.
