Light Grip Swings: the model golfer in position

Light Grip Swings

Lowers grip tension so the club swings freely instead of being muscled.

SmoothnessWrist Action
8 min · Range or home · Starter

Use this if

You strangle the grip and the swing feels stiff.

The fault

Strangling the grip and steering the ball, which makes the swing stiff and jerky.

Steps

  1. Take your grip, then lift the trail thumb and index finger off
  2. Make 5 three-quarter swings with no ball, holding just firmly enough
  3. Re-grip fully but keep the same light pressure (about 3 of 10)
  4. Hit 5 balls at about 70% holding that pressure

Hold it light, let it swing

Reps

5 fingers-off swings (no ball) + 5 balls with a light full grip, x2

Why it works

Tension in the hands and forearms stiffens the arms and makes them push the club. Lifting the trail thumb and index finger off makes the club rest in the fingers, so it swings rather than gets shoved.

You need

Club, ball

At home

Fine at home with room to swing; do the fingers-off swings without a ball.
