Miss the Towel: the model golfer in position

Miss the Towel

A towel behind the ball, then a tee ahead of it: strike ball-first and brush past the tee.

Consistency
10 min · Range · Starter

Use this if

You hit fat or thin, especially off mats.

The fault

Hitting behind the ball (fat) or catching it thin, often hidden by forgiving range mats.

Steps

  1. Lay a folded towel about one clubhead (4 in) behind the ball
  2. Set up with a touch more pressure on the lead foot
  3. Hit punch shots, then half and full swings, missing the towel
  4. Rung 2: push a tee in a few inches ahead of the ball
  5. Strike the ball, then brush the turf at the tee

Ball first; leave the towel untouched

Reps

5 punches, 5 half swings, 5 full; then 5 with the tee ahead; slide the towel closer when you're clean

Why it works

The towel catches any early bottoming-out, and the tee ahead gives the low point a target past the ball. Missing one and brushing the other needs pressure moving forward and the chest over the ball at impact.

You need

Towel, tee, club, ball

At home

On a mat, the towel shows the fat shots the mat would otherwise hide.
