Three-Ball Gate: the model golfer in position

Three-Ball Gate

Strike only the middle of three balls to center your strike; start small.

Consistency
10 min · Range · Intermediate

Use this if

Strikes wander heel to toe, or you've caught a shank.

The fault

Strikes wandering from heel to toe, with the odd shank.

Steps

  1. Line up three balls a few inches apart, across the target line
  2. Hit small punch shots, striking only the middle ball
  3. Far ball moved: the club went out (heel). Near ball: it came in (toe)
  4. If an outer ball moves, slow down
  5. Progress to half swings, then full swings

Middle ball only; outer balls stay put

Reps

5 punches, 5 half swings, 5 full; restart a stage after any gate touch

Why it works

The outer balls act as gates. Clip the far ball and the club moved out, toward a heel or hosel strike (the shank pattern); clip the near ball and it came in, toward the toe. Starting small and slow lets you find the middle before adding speed.
