Neutral Grip Build: the model golfer in position

Neutral Grip Build

Build the grip in the fingers so the club can hinge and the face can square.

Wrist ActionConsistency
5 min · Range or home · Starter

Use this if

The grip sits in your palm or the face stays open.

The fault

The club sits in the palm with the lead thumb on top, so it can't hinge and the face tends to stay open (a slice).

Steps

  1. Let the lead arm hang; lay the grip across the base of the fingers
  2. Close the hand so the heel pad sits on top of the grip
  3. Thumb and index finger of the lead hand sit snug together
  4. Trail palm covers the lead thumb; trail thumb on the opposite side
  5. Pick one grip style and build it the same way every ball

Fingers, not palm; build it the same

Reps

Build the grip 10 times without a ball, then every ball for one bucket

Why it works

Seating the grip across the base of the fingers lets the wrists hinge freely, and matching the hands keeps them working together. One grip, built the same way each time, can reduce a big source of face changes.
